It is just all fine and dandy, until…….
Sometimes life has an interesting way of getting your attention. My mother often told me that I came out of the womb running, twirling, skipping, and somersaulting. So it is no surprise that I have stayed active all my life, as many of us “Baby Boomer’s” have. Exercise continued to be a priority in my life, a priority that eventually turned into my main source of income. It was living, breathing, training, and teaching in Martial Arts, Yoga, and the Fitness world in which I wholeheartedly participated and witnessed, what I will call, the “It is all just fine and dandy, until…. syndrome”.
“It is all just fine and dandy, until…. syndrome” starts a little like this. You were sparring in class, just a little give and take, feeling good, the speed and intensity started to pick up, then suddenly, your partner blocked, then grabbed your right kicking leg giving it a pull…and pop. Oh man, bummer you just tweaked your hamstring, you go to the side, ice it a little bit, go home take a couple of Ibuprofen’s. The next day off to work you go sporting a little limp, spending the day favoring that side of the body. You adjust how you sit, stand, and move for a couple of days. It is just a little blip, an inconvenience and you head back to training. Yep, it happens to most of us, no big hairy deal, you move on.
Barely a month later you notice this nagging little ache in the right hip, a little annoyance. You just keep training. About a year later you are out on a run (not that I ever run) and disaster hits, you step in a hole, twist your right ankle….Ouch and Owwie! You have a pretty good ankle sprain. Oh well, you grab a couple of crutches and spend then next week hobbling around on crutches. Your neck and shoulders are starting to contract and tighten and by the end of the week a headache become your constant companion.
You wait patiently to heal. Ya right! You head back to training the second you can stand the pain, ready to make up for lost time. Soon you notice that the hamstring is tweaking again, that little ache in the hip is starting to become a bigger and more constant ache and additionally your back feels out of whack. No big deal, you suck it up and just keep training…doesn’t everybody?
This scenario is then repeated in varying versions, for years, perhaps even for decades. Then one day your body hits a wall. Those chronic little aches and pains have turned into something that you simply can’t avoid, ignore, or overcome. You have just entered the “It is all just fine and dandy, until…. syndrome”.
Sounds familiar? Well, keep an eye out for my next blog….
