“The Only Constant is Change”

“The only constant is change” is something that my children have heard over and over again throughout their life. It is one of my favorite sayings.  I notice as time keeps rolling by, this saying seems to become more and more relevant in my life.

For the last couple of years Luis and I have noticed that although our love for  Shotokan Karate is still there, it no longer defines us in the same way that it has in the past.  With our youngest child heading into his Senior year of High School and our two daughters already off living life, the “empty nest” is just around the corner. We have started to look at what we would like to do in this next phase of our lives.

We noticed that our way and approach to teaching classes has evolved as well as the type of classes we offer.  While we do love teaching, training, and staying active, we can not help but notice that the old paradigm of working harder, faster, stronger has it’s limits and no longer serves us or our students.

Our very insightful daughter Victoria came up with the idea of changing our name to reflect the evolution of our teaching and to help us define our unique skills and gifts. She proposed the name “Power and Finesse Fitness”.  As usual, she is brilliant and we hemmed and hawed and procrastinated, until one day we looked around and said, “time for a change”.

The more I thought about the concepts of “Power” and “Finesse” the more I realized how descriptive these words were of our teaching.  “Power” is defined as “to move or travel with great speed or force” and synonyms of the word “Finesse” are expertise, subtlety, artistry, and mastery.  The tag line for our new name is “True Power can only be achieved by Finesse of technique”.

When you have spent over three decades honing your craft, you really start to look for the subtle changes that make huge differences in your student’s and client’s experiences.  It is this mastery, or as Victoria claimed it, “Finesse” that makes us excited every single day to go to the studio/dojo to teach another class, work with another client, and make a positive difference in people’s lives.  It is exploring, creating, and teaching these concepts in the different classes that we offer.

This truly sets us apart from the large corporate fitness centers and even some of the small individually owned studios, because there is no shortcut to experience, mastery, and finesse!

It is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that we announce the change of our business to Power and Finesse Fitness!  We will always look back at Midwest Karate & Yoga Association of St. Louis Park with nostalgia and great fondness, but know that truly “The Only Constant is Change!” We have been moving slowly to embrace our talents and gifts.  We hope that you will support us in this change and be our messengers and advocates as we launch our new enterprise “Power and Finesse Fitness”.
